The upgrade option lets players increase the gear rating of an item up to 700 points and add a final bonus. Items can be upgraded by keeping them in inventory, and then taking them to the kiln.

Certain items are worth upgrading due to their unique stats. (For example, a perfectly roll breakpoint armor is used in melee PvP). Other items like weapons don't really change after an upgrade and aren't worth the cost.

Weapons

Armor

To upgrade your armor, head to one of the Great Fairy Fountains in the game. Each piece of armor can be upgraded up to three levels, and the amount of material and Rupees required for each will vary. You'll require anything from three Red Chuchu jelly and 10 Rupees to upgrade the initial armor piece, and anywhere between five Rubies or 10 Fire-Breath Lizalfos Horns to upgrade each subsequent one. For instance the Champion Leathers could be upgraded to +5 defense, which allows you to keep up with a large group of enemies in most cold climates and the Snowquill Headdress can be upgraded all the way to +20 defense, granting the protection needed to survive the full-on assault with a handful of friends.

Note that armor can't be upgraded the same way as weapons, so you'll need to focus on upgrading it to gain physical power if you're a Warrior or Spell Power if you're a Mage. It's also a good idea to save your armor upgrades for the armor you'll still be wearing at the end of the game, such as the Ring of Lightning and Spectral Shield, or the helmet you wear to fight the final boss, the Monter Parts Merchant's mask.

When the old Trinkets are no longer usable they can be upgraded. This allows a player to increase both their power and value over time. They can be traded among players, making them an alternative to gold.

Players should upgrade their most important items first.
